Itasca, IL — The National Safety Council is elevating consciousness of over-the-counter naloxone nasal spray for emergency remedy of opioid overdoses within the workplace.
The NSC Respond Ready Workplace program options info on the opioid disaster and the effectiveness of naloxone, and affords steerage on how employers and staff can correctly administer the remedy.
Data from NSC’s Injury Facts web site reveals that overdose deaths of all kinds accounted for almost 9% of all workplace harm deaths in 2021. Overdose-related deaths within the workplace have climbed 536% since 2011.
In March, the Food and Drug Administration authorized the naloxone nasal spray Narcan. The company authorized a second OTC spray, RiVive, in July. NIOSH says naloxone “can temporarily stop many of the life-threatening effects” of opioid overdoses and “help restore breathing and reverse the sedation and unconsciousness” frequent amongst overdose circumstances.

NSC is amongst a bunch of organizations supporting bipartisan laws launched within the House on Sept. 12 that may direct OSHA to set up employer steerage on buying opioid overdose reversal remedy and coaching staff on its use. A companion invoice to the Workplace Overdose Reversal Kits (WORK) to Save Lives Act is predicted to be launched within the Senate.
