British minister Michael Gove stated on Tuesday the federal government had been compelled to intervene within the day-to-day operating of England’s second-largest metropolis, Birmingham, which earlier this month successfully declared chapter.

Gove stated he would appoint commissioners to take over the operating of Birmingham City Council – the most important native authority in Europe – having decided that the council had did not adjust to its duties.

“I’m proposing the transfer to the commissioners of the exercise of all functions associated with the council’s governance and scrutiny of strategic decision making, all functions associated with its financial governance,” Gove, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, advised parliament.

On Sept. 5, Birmingham issued a ‘Section 114 notice’, successfully declaring itself in monetary misery and not solvent because it confronted spiralling liabilities referring to historic equal pay claims.
